Univera parent finishes 2019 with $170M surplus

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Despite ongoing challenges in health care, the parent of Univera Healthcare reported “solid” financial performance in the past year as well as overall membership growth of 8,400 members.

Rochester-based Excellus Healthcare covers 1.5 million individuals across Upstate, including just under 100,000 covered by Univera in the eight-counties of Western New York.

The company broke $6 billion in premium revenue for 2019, earning net income of $170.8 million, or 2.9 percent, including investment income of $125.8 million before taxes. That’s compared to 2018, when Excellus had net income of $150 million on revenue of $5.75 billion, or 2.6 percent.
