BUFFALO, N.Y. — Ongoing uncertainty in the theater world tied to the Covid-19 pandemic has led to layoffs at Buffalo’s largest professional theater.
Shea’s Performing Arts Center confirmed seven employees have been laid off. Combined with furloughs implemented throughout the summer, that leaves a back office staff of nine full-time employees and 18 others working between 16 and 24 hours weekly.
“It’s a painful, awful thing to have to go through. These folks are like family,” said Michael Murphy, president and CEO of the downtown Buffalo theater company.
