BUFFALO, N.Y. — A popular coffee shop on Buffalo's West Side is temporarily closing.
Remedy House, which has been in business for more than six years, announced Tuesday on Instagram that "effective immediately we will close our doors as we prepare the transition to new ownership. After a lot of careful deliberation and planning, we have decided the time has come for us to move on."
Remedy House owners said they are dedicated to helping a "future version" of the shop get going in Buffalo's Five Points neighborhood.
About a year ago, Remedy House workers went on strike before deciding that that they would form a union.
"We are excited for this next step in the Remedy House journey," the coffee shop said in a statement last year. "From the first time we spoke with the organizing committee, we expressed our full support of their efforts. We voluntarily recognized the formation of this union within Remedy House."
A Facebook page for Remedy House Workers United said the employees are "heartbroken" about the closure, for which they blame the owners.
"We are heartbroken that Remedy House has closed. We have put everything into making Remedy House succeed and we are sad that we won't be able to serve our community," Wednesday's statement said. "We want to be clear that the closure is due to mismanagement of the business and an inability of the owners to pay employees.
"If Remedy House is to reopen in the future, there are a number of changes that need to occur before that is even a possibility, including workers being compensated for the wages they are owed. We appreciate all of the support from our loyal customers."
