New York State: consumers can bring, use their own plastic bags

Originally, Wegmans said customers could not bring plastic bags, but the grocery store chain has since changed its stance.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The plastic bag ban in New York State goes into effect just one month from today.

Ahead of the statewide ban, Wegmans eliminated plastic bags at checkouts on Monday.

Since then, a lot of viewers asked 2 On Your Side if shoppers are allowed to bring their old, saved plastic bags to use at checkout.

Originally, Wegmans said no, but the grocery store chain has since changed its stance.

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, under the new law, stores are not allowed to prevent anyone from bringing in any kind of bag.
