Fire damage minor at Athenex plant; CEO recovering from Covid-19

Construction on the 320,000-square-foot Dunkirk factory was completed in 2020 and manufacturing of finished ingredients is expected to start this year.

DUNKIRK, N.Y. — Damage from an electrical fire on Jan. 23 at the Athenex Inc. plant in Dunkirk was contained to one room, according to reports. Firefighters received the call around 4:30 p.m. and were at the scene for about two hours.

The biotech company’s main offices are on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus and there's a plant in Newstead. Construction on the 320,000-square-foot Dunkirk factory was completed in 2020 and manufacturing of finished ingredients is expected to start this year.

The company also announced this week that CEO Johnson Lau had been hospitalized from Covid-19 and is now recuperating at home while performing his full duties. Lau, who contracted the virus earlier in January, was unable to attend the annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference but other representatives from Athenex’s senior management team did participate.  You can read the full story on Buffalo Business First's website
