Calspan opens new $13M sled testing facility

The new facility has tripled the company’s capacity, Sauer said, and there’s plenty of additional unused space for potential growth.

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. — Calspan Corp.’s new sled testing facility is ready for business.

Sled testing is a simulated crash testing for the automotive industry. The facility at 40 Sonwil Drive in Cheektowaga also will be used for car seat and child restraint systems.

“We’re doing testing on the equipment, and they’re already conducting tests for customers,” CEO Peter Sauer said. “Some of the growth for this facility is coming from our success with the crash facility, where our customers are saying, ‘Hey, can’t you do this testing for us also.’”

Typical crash testing includes the full destruction of a vehicle. Sled testing, or body-in-white testing, places the cab of a vehicle – with seats, steering wheel, dashboard and test dummies – on a sled.    You can read the full story on Buffalo Business First's website
