BUFFALO, N.Y. — Amazon is fast approaching its busiest season, and its local sites — already big local employers — will need to hire hundreds more to accommodate anticipated demand.
On Walden Avenue in Lancaster, the company employs about 1,300 people between its sorting center (BUF5) and its returns facility (BUF9). BUF5, which opened in 2017, is staffed with about 900 people, but come Black Friday and Cyber Monday — the start of the peak season for Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) — it will need another couple hundred, according to Benji Croom, operations manager for the site.
“After that weekend, we start to transition to much larger items,” Croom said. “People are spending their budget on the bigger purchases up front. Then as Christmas approaches, they need smaller, last-minute items, like stocking stuffers.”
