BUFFALO, N.Y. — Tucker Curtin thought he was ready when he reopened the Steer Restaurant & Saloon in 2022, followed by the reopening in 2023 of the Lake Effect Diner next door.

Both North Buffalo sites had operated at full steam before the pandemic and were buoyed by students and the local community in the surrounding University Heights neighborhood. Both shut down in summer 2021 in the midst of labor shortages following the pandemic and Curtin pointed to burnout for himself and his staff.

With the 2022 reopening, things didn’t go quite as planned, despite modified operating hours and new menus. But now he’s trying again with the relaunch of both sites to include new menu offerings and expanded hours.
