Rite Aid closures create opportunities for other Buffalo-area retailers

Rite Aid (NYSE:RAD) filed for a Chapter 11 reorganization in fall of last year as it looked to restructure and reduce a debt load of $8.6 billion.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Sitting roadside in front of Brighton Eggert Pharmacy Inc. in Tonawanda is a large sign that reads: "Welcome Rite Aid patients. Try our family owned pharmacy."

Nearby in Tonawanda, a board at the Walgreens at the corner of Sheridan Drive and Parker Boulevard greets customers with: "Welcome Rite Aid pharmacy #1910 customers."

The signs signal the hole left by Rite Aid closing some local stores amid its Chapter 11 bankruptcy process. At least eight Buffalo-area locations will shut down, although the company has not released a full list of sites permanently ending operations.
