BUFFALO, N.Y. — The hiring freeze is expected to bring the $16.5 million deficit down to $3 million. It will not prevent the university from moving forward with its president search, which is nearing its final stages, according to the college.
“We cannot avoid the reality of our situation any longer,” interim president Bonita Durand said in a speech given earlier this month and posted to the college's website. “I cannot stress this enough — the power to maintain control in shaping the destiny of our institution is in our hands. If we squander this time through denial, avoidance or other delay tactics, we risk the autonomy to make these decisions and we inhibit the future success of Buffalo State University.”
Durand said the structural deficit grew to over $16 million in the last decade, as employment numbers did not trend downward at the same speed as enrollment.
