BUFFALO, N.Y. — Independent Health is cutting 66 jobs across its operation in a cost-saving measure.

The workforce realignment, being announced Oct. 17, follows a comprehensive review at the Amherst-based health plan in response to ongoing financial pressures.

According to an internal memo with talking points for its workforce acquired by Buffalo Business First, the decision to reduce staffing levels came after exploring all other alternatives, including efforts to maximize operational efficiencies and budget cuts in non-personnel areas.

In a statement given to 2 On Your Side, Independent Health's spokesperson said the following:

"Independent Health announced today the elimination of 66 positions as part of efforts to streamline operations amid growing challenges within the healthcare industry.

Rising costs of prescription and specialty drugs are driving healthcare expenses to unsustainable levels, making it increasingly difficult for individuals and businesses to afford necessary coverage. In response to this trend, Independent Health conducted a thorough review of its operations, leading to these cuts that will impact approximately 4 percent of the workforce across various departments.

The changes will be invisible to members and will not compromise the award-winning customer service they have come to expect. Independent Health will continue to explore new technologies and strategies to enhance operational efficiency and meet evolving healthcare needs.

Independent Health is offering outplacement services and severance packages to support those affected."
