A housing hotspot is booming in Amherst

An uncertain economy has slowed development in Western New York, but demand for housing has kept the construction of apartments and homes in Amherst going strong.

AMHERST, N.Y. — The town long has been a housing hotspot. Amherst issued 424 building permits for new housing units in 2022, the most of any municipality in Erie County and far above second-place Buffalo with 245, according to US Census Bureau data. Amherst's tally included 398 single-family homes and 26 multifamily units.

Numerous large apartment projects are in the works, but there's some sign that the pace of development may slow if current economic conditions continue, according to Angela Rossi, Amherst director of economic development.

"We've been seeing it continue on, but what we're hearing from the developers is the projects that have not been started are the projects they're pulling back on," she said.
