Here's how grocery stores pick their locations

Grocery store placement has as much to do with shoppers' habits as it does the surrounding area's wealth — or lack thereof.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Starting at Trader Joe’s and ending at Whole Foods Market, a shopper can travel a handful of miles in Amherst and hit seven national grocery retailers. (Make that eight, once Costco opens nearby.)

In stark comparison, Braymiller Market is the only full-service supermarket in central downtown Buffalo and, as nationally publicized after the racist May 14, 2022, attack, Tops Markets is the only one in the Masten Park neighborhood on the city's East Side.

Which begs the questions: How do grocery retailers choose locations for their stores?
