BUFFALO, N.Y. — When walking through regional malls — even now, during what is typically the busiest quarter for retailers — it’s not uncommon to see mall walkers who aren’t shopping, empty storefronts and closing or moving signs.
One sign at an Eastern Hills Mall store even read: “I do not know what is going on with the mall.”
Malls across the country are struggling. The pandemic hurt them financially while it sped the rise of online shopping and the changing of customer habits. Some of Buffalo Niagara's indoor shopping centers are redeveloping themselves to succeed in the post-Covid world; others are still waiting for that opportunity.
