Buffalo State identifies its first doctorate program

Buffalo State University’s first doctorate program, which is under review by SUNY, will be a doctor of professional studies in creativity and change leadership.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo State University’s first doctorate program, which is under review by SUNY, will be a doctor of professional studies in creativity and change leadership.

The degree has been in the works since before the school achieved university status last year and is the “next natural step” since the master’s program began in the mid-1970s, said Gerard Puccio, chair of the university’s Department of Creativity and Change Leadership.

“It was the first graduate program in creativity in the world,” he said. “These are challenging times, and that’s exactly when you need creativity and change leadership.”

In May, Buffalo State announced it will cut 37 programs as a cost-saving measure, since the college is trying to right-size its $16.5 million structural deficit. The school also enacted a hiring freeze last year and in this spring offered a voluntary separation program for full-time retirement-eligible employees.
