KENMORE, N.Y. — Several changes have contributed increasing enrollment at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute at a time when local private schools are struggling to keep numbers steady.
The private secondary school in Tonawanda went from 622 students last year to 651 students in the 2023-24 school year — a 5% increase.
“Thirty years ago, the typical St. Joe’s student went to a Northtowns Catholic school,” said Chris Fulco, president of St. Joe’s.
Now, the high school’s population comes from almost 60 middle and elementary schools from “every neighborhood” in the Western New York region he said. More than half of the students come from public or charter schools, principal James Spillman said.
