These ZIP codes have highest concentration of private school students

There’s bad news and good news for private schools in Western New York.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — There’s bad news and good news for private schools in Western New York.

There are fewer students enrolled in the region in prekindergarten through 12th grade, which means more competition for recruiting learners to private schools. The area’s concentration of private school students, however, has stayed steady at 13.1%.

That’s according to regional data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey five-year estimates for student enrollment ages 3 and up for pre-K through 12th grade.

The latest information shows that 254,097 students in the eight counties of Western New York – Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans and Wyoming – are enrolled in pre-K through 12th grade. That’s less than the 257,598 enrolled the previous year, based on 2021 five-year Census Bureau data.
