Restaurant news: Openings and closings in WNY during the month of May

As the busy summer season nears, Western New York continues to see growth and expansion in the restaurant and hospitality space.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — As the busy summer season nears, Western New York continues to see growth and expansion in the restaurant and hospitality space.

In May, Buffalo Business First reported on nine openings, nine closings, two sales and 15 projects under development plus more than a dozen updates and trend stories.

Openings in Niagara Falls, Buffalo, Grand Island, North Tonawanda and West Seneca

Sully’s Harbor Bar and Grill opened at the Erie Basin Marina in the space formerly known as The Hatch and William K’s. The restaurant comes from Angelo Canna Jr. in partnership with Mike Shatzel and Jason Davidson, the team behind Liberty Hound.

• Papa John’s opened a site inside One Niagara Welcome Center at 360 Rainbow Blvd. in Niagara Falls. The food court location comes from Muhammed Shoaib, who also operates six other Papa John’s franchises in the region, including a location inside the Quality Inn on First Street in Niagara Falls.

Tropical Smoothie has opened at 2236 Delaware Ave. in North Buffalo, marking the fifth location for franchisee Jim Breidenstein and district manager Julie Roman. The company worked with Picone Construction and architect TK Studio LLC on the buildout in Buffalo and sites in Hamburg, Tonawanda and Williamsville. A sixth site is now in the works.
