BUFFALO, N.Y. — Highmark Health of Pennsylvania has laid off 182 workers — including 15 in Western New York and another seven in the Albany area.
The move comes just weeks after the three-year anniversary of the deal that brought HealthNow NY into Pittsburgh-based Highmark.
When that affiliation was approved by regulators with the New York State Department of Finance, the company had agreed on job protections for three years for nearly all of HealthNow’s rank and file workforce. That excluded at the time 80-plus leadership-level employees with titles of director and above – dozens of whom ended up leaving the company within a year.
