Former hospital heads to auction after sale falls through

With no buyer in site nearly 10 months after the shutdown of Eastern Niagara Hospital, the building is going up for auction.

LOCKPORT, N.Y. — With no buyer in site nearly 10 months after the shutdown of Eastern Niagara Hospital, the building is going up for auction.

The online auction April 18-25 will be handled by Tranzon Auction Properties, a Maine company with a Buffalo office. Marketing materials on the Tranzon website describe it as a 5.83-acre campus that offers development opportunities including residential apartments, office space, retail outlets, senior housing and health care, subject to zoning approvals.

The 134-bed hospital at 521 East Ave. closed June 17 after running out of cash. The hospital had been operating since 2019 under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, exiting briefly in 2020 to take advantage of pandemic-related health care emergency funding before requesting to abandon the bankruptcy late last year.
