BUFFALO, N.Y. — Erie County Medical Center is getting national attention, but not the type to boast about.
The Buffalo trauma hospital is among just 10 hospitals nationwide to receive a failing grade from Leapfrog Group, which issues letter grades twice annually to 3,000 hospitals nationwide based on dozens of patient safety measures and the ability of hospitals to protect patients from preventable errors, accidents and injuries.
ECMC officials have disputed the F grade, saying in a prepared statement that it found reporting errors in the timeframe measured by Leapfrog for the grade, which it says was in 2020 during the pandemic.
“ECMC submitted patient cases to CMS that should have been excluded using CMS's own exclusion criteria. This over-reporting resulted in the appearance of more hospital acquired conditions and thus produced a lower grade for this specific reporting period.”
