The co-op in Williamsville will no longer be happening

Plans are off for a co-op market at 480 Evans St. in Williamsville.

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. — Plans are off for a co-op market at 480 Evans St. in Williamsville.

The Village Co-op Market of Williamsville board voted May 15 to dissolve its lease with Benderson Development after a capital campaign didn't get enough investment from the member-owners, according to Jim Walfrand, president of the co-op.

The group had bank financing lined up but only raised about $300,000 of the $1.5 million to $2 million required in the capital campaign.

“We’re still very much committed to bringing a co-op to Williamsville,” he said. “We just have to adjust our plans.”

The board initially expected to open the market on Evans Street this fall, Business First previously reported. The idea started in 2017, when a little over a dozen Williamsville residents decided to bring a member-owned food co-op to the village.
