CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. — A national nonprofit organization plans to tear down a long-vacant Cheektowaga nursing home to build a 91-unit apartment building for homeless veterans.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation will present its plans for Veterans Village at 3600 Harlem Road to the town planning board next week.

"These are high-quality, affordable housing programs for veterans," said Gavin Naples, vice president of the foundation. "This is permanent housing. It's not a transitional program; it's not a shelter."

Founded in the wake of Sept. 11, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation supports first responders, veterans and the families of Sept. 11 victims.

"Our newest program seeks to help the most vulnerable of our veteran population, veterans who are struggling with homelessness," Naples said.
