The future of long-vacant AM&A's building

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Like many Western New Yorkers, Michael Schmand remembers going downtown as a child to see the elaborate Christmas displays at the Adam Meldrum & Anderson Co. department store on Main Street, and bringing his own son to the same store to see Santa Claus decades later.

Now, Schmand is one of many people trying to figure out what to do with the long-vacant, decrepit building, which has been tied up in various court cases for years. As the executive director of Buffalo Place, he’s involved in constant discussions about what best to do with a former Buffalo institution.

“That is such a prominent building, and it takes up so much space on the block — something needs to happen with it,” he said.
