A look at Scherer Furniture. The business, open since 1897, had no need to go online and has operated largely the same as they did pre-Covid.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo is losing a fifth-generation family business.

Scherer’s Furniture, located at 124 E Genesee St., is permanently closing, as co-owners and father and son Fred and Jim Scherer plan to retire, according to a news release. The furniture business will start liquidating its four-story showroom Jan. 18.

Jim Scherer’s great-grandfather, Frederick, started the business in 1897 one block away from its current location. The business moved to 124 Genesee St. during the Great Depression in the mid-1930s as it outgrew its space and has been there ever since.
