A popular East Side market closes unexpectedly

Residents are wondering why the popular Mandella Market is closed. City inspectors say the building has a "serious safety issue."

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Residents took to Facebook on Thursday night, questioning what happened to the Mandella Market.

Residents are talking about the Broadway and Jefferson locations. It's closed and gated. The East Ferry and Broadway store is still up and running.

"He got a lot of stuff that's convenient that we can get to," a resident said "There be a lot of people that come through here. They put gas and food. Go play their numbers."

All day, people have been pulling into the parking lot. Then they pull off when they notice the store is closed. You might not get your milk and bread, but people are still filling their tanks.

"They just built it around four years ago. That's crazy," a resident told 2 On Your Side.

A store employee tells 2 On Your Side that the second location is under construction. He went to the closed location and saw four public notice signs taped to its doors.

The Buffalo Inspection Commissioner Kathy Amdur told 2 On Your Side in a statement, "During a routine annual license inspection ... inspectors found several code violations that created a serious safety issue."

She added, "The violations included cutting and removal of the structural roof trusses, unpermitted construction, and occupancy of the 2nd-floor storage area."

The market will be closed temporarily. However, nearby residents are inconvenienced, especially those who have to walk to the store.

Amdur says inspectors issued the owner an emergency repair permit Thursday. She will continue working with the owner to have every issue fixed.
