ALABAMA, N.Y. — Plug Power Inc.'s decision to become the first tenant in Genesee County's STAMP high-tech park could have ripple effects for the Town of Alabama site.
Latham-based Plug Power has said it will invest $264 million to build a plant that will work in tandem with a similar facility proposed in the Rochester suburb of Henrietta. The Genesee County plant, where construction could start later this year, is expected to employ 62 people earning at least $75,000 annually, according to public documents. The exact size of the plant is still to be determined.
Landing Plug Power — which was regionally courted under the name of "Project Gateway" — could play a significant role in efforts to land a $17 billion Samsung semiconductor plant. The STAMP (Science and Technology Advanced Manufacturing Plant) site is one of five finalists, with the others all in Phoenix and Austin.
