Lawyers recommend City of Buffalo pay 2 men who were wrongfully convicted of murder

The recommendation will go before the full Buffalo Common Council. Darryl Boyd spent 28 years in prison, and John Walker spent 22 years in prison.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Lawyers have recommended that the City of Buffalo pay two men wrongfully convicted of murder more than $4 million each.

Darryl Boyd and John Walker were imprisoned for decades for the death of William Crawford in 1976. They filed lawsuits against the city in 2022, accusing former Buffalo Police homicide detectives of withholding evidence about another suspect and using false information to pin the crime on five teenagers.

The recommendation will go before the full Buffalo Common Council on Tuesday.

Walker spent 22 years in prison.

"Thinking back as far as when I was 16 years old, me and my friends and how our life was stolen from us," Walker told 2 On Your Side back in July of 2022. "And not only did we go and suffer things. I saw men die over nothing in prison. I saw men lose their manhood in prison. I've had all kinds of issues in prison. I couldn't have made it unless I was the person I am."

Boyd spent 28 years in prison.

"Unlawfully detained," Boyd said in in 2022. "And then after that put through suffering, pain, and misery. And then to be returned back to the location where I was kidnapped from to be covered by parole. I just want to know what's going on with this."
