NEW YORK — As the temperature begins to go down, the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is preparing for winter. The DEC is looking for individuals to participate in a winter rock salt use survey.

The purpose of this survey is to better understand the amount of rock salt New Yorkers typically use and people's awareness of the risks of too much salt.

From these results, the DEC will be able to tailor their outreach and education in efforts to reduce the overuse of rock salt on roads, parking lots, and sidewalks.

State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said, “The application of road salt is a delicate balance between keeping our roadways safe and protecting the environment, and the Department of Transportation is always refining its approach."

According to the DEC, using too much salt has the potential to degrade infrastructure and contaminate runoff that ultimately enters streams and waterbodies.

There are 27 questions and it takes only a few minutes to complete.
