BUFFALO, N.Y. — Saturday, Aug. 31 will commemorate the addition of a Free Fishing Day for New York State this year.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the extra day, which helps support her "Get Offline, Get Outside" campaign.
Now with a total of seven Free Fishing Days, New York State residents are encouraged to try out fishing without needing to purchase a license.
This program has been around since 1991. It aims for individuals to try out a new hobby and encourage conservation.
On these select days, the license requirement is waived and libraries are also allowing patrons to sign out a fishing rod.

"Fishing can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of age or ability, and I encourage both new and practiced anglers to use this bonus free fishing day to throw out a line," New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Interim Commissioner Sean Mahar said in a statement.
People are reminded that even though the license requirement is waived, all other fishing regulations are still in effect.
