Tony Hawk Foundation offers matching grant for Lockport skatepark

Other skateparks around Western New York also got some help, including sites in Batavia and Ellicottville.

LOCKPORT, N.Y. — Big money will be coming for a Lockport skate park.

The current Railyard Skatepark is made of wood and is becoming a safety hazard as it's falling apart.

A group of local skate kids and city leaders were able to fund-raise some of their goal, but on Saturday, the Tony Hawk Foundation offered a matching grant for the project.

"This new skatepark will be a concrete-poured-in-place structure. It will be permanent and last dozens of years, requires very little maintenance over the years," Trevor Staples of the Tony Hawk Foundation said.

Added Lockport Mayor Michelle Roman: "This is just one of those things that we really need for our youth and everybody in the community. It's a positive thing all around."

The Tony Hawk Foundation partnered with the Ralph Wilson Jr. Foundation to develop a series of grants, called Built to Play Skatepark grants, for up to $300,000 in matching funds.

Other skateparks around Western New York also got some help, including sites in Batavia and Ellicottville.

"It would just be great for the younger generation to have something to ride on especially cause this skate park is slowly rotting away" skater Ashton Wallak told 2 On Your Side in February.
