Veterans Face GI Bill Issue As College Students

Buffalo State and other colleges are trying to help some students who are veterans and now face payment delays of assistance from the VA under the GI Bill program.

BUFFALO, NY - Some veterans enrolled in college using the GI Bill to cover costs for tuition and other expenses have been seeing some delays in payment from the V.A.

Buffalo State has had a veteran and military service program to assist veterans who are students for a significant number of years.

NBC News reported an apparent problem with the VA's computer software that handles enhanced benefits for veterans is causing part of the problem. But officials at Buffalo State are helping out as much as they can.

Brad Baumgardner who is the Buffalo State Coordinator of Veteran Services says, "I think the big problem is usually with BAH - the basic allowance for housing that would then support their rent, mortgage payment, those kinds of things...and I have had a number of students come in saying they've been delayed. We've had about 20 to 30 students probably come in and say that they haven't gotten their money and we have any number of ways to try to help them figure that solution or that problem out. Advocacy is obviously a big one."

It turns out that some of that VA processing for GI Bill benefit payments across the country is actually handled at facilities in the Buffalo area.
