NEW YORK — Child Passenger Safety Week begins Sunday, and Governor Kathy Hochul reminded New York State on Friday about the importance of car seat checks.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), improperly installing car seats is common among parents (42%) and is a leading cause of death of children when involved in car crashes.
NYS Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder said, “Crashes are one of the leading killers of children, but correctly using a car seat, booster seat or seat belt is the most effective way to minimize that risk."
This upcoming Saturday, September 21, events are taking place across the state to get car seats checked for free.
In Western New York, you can head over to Cheektowaga at the Sisters Hospital St. Joseph's Campus. From 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., there will be appointments available for checks. To make an appointment, call Catholic Health at (716) 447-6205.
Technicians will help educate parents on the proper way to install car seats based on the child's age and size and will use the "Learn, Practice, and Explain" model.
Governor Hochul said "I urge all parents and caregivers to take advantage of this opportunity to ensure their children are properly secured."
