Orchid exhibit to showcase more than 2,000 blooms

The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens Orchid Exhibit runs through March 3.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — After last week, you probably agree we've all had enough winter for a while.

So you might be ready to visit a Western New York destination that's always tropical.

"You're going to feel it when you walk in here. It is full, there are blooming petals everywhere and just like the most gorgeous pinks and purples and whites and yellows and any color that you can think of and it is so joyful," Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens Director of Marketing and Sales Shaunna Rospierski said.

It's the orchid exhibit, and it's unlike one they've ever done before.

"Whether you're an orchid lover or not, you're going to leave here as an orchid lover," Rospierski said.

The place is packed with more than two thousand of the perky flowers, and the displays play to one of their unique abilities in the plant world.

"The really cool thing about orchids is they are epiphytes, which means that they grow on top of other plants," Rospierski said. "Which gives us some really creative ability to do different things with them, like build them on arches and ladders and off of bamboo."

There are also colorful, twisty sculptures throughout the exhibit that the botanical gardens brought in just for the show.

"What you're going to see is these really amazing metal sculptures that kind of follow these winding lines, and they have twists and turns and they reflect," Rospierski said. "So they really add to the orchid exhibit, and they kind of emanate the roots of an orchid so it's really nice to see the flow."

Last week's storm may have delayed the opening, but the exhibit will now be up through early March.

"Our team did such a great job hustling together. We had everybody helping from different departments, we had our Niagara Frontier Orchid Society, they were helping us through everything," Rospierski said. "So we were able to still put the show on and we were just a few days behind so, all is well."
