BUFFALO, N.Y. — Volunteers with the Soul Saving Revival Center gave away more than 500 turkeys and warm clothing to residents on Buffalo's East Side.
The group says all of the turkeys were gone within less than an hour on Saturday.
"It felt good. I saw people coming to me crying, giving me hugs, telling me how they're going to fry, or bake, or roast, or smoke their turkeys, asking me if I want to come get a plate, thanking me and my family," community activist Stephon Wright told 2 On Your Side.
"So it was just a beautiful situation to know, before I even got there today, that the line was wrapped around not the building, but the corner. Over 200 to 300 people were in line to get turkeys today."
The center says it doubled the amount of turkeys given out last year. This was the 18th time the Fillmore Avenue center held the community event.
"We are intentional about being in our community and meeting people right where they are. Our goal is to make sure everyone feels seen, loved, and supported," elder Robert L. Robinson III said.
Added Sister Ravalla Gaines: "I felt led to share clothes with the community, knowing how even small acts of generosity can make a big difference. When God calls you to give, you give from the heart."
