“This time of year, we always see an uptick in the number of emergency calls,” said David Morales, a spokesperson for The Firefighters Association of The State of New York. “You’re bringing in a Christmas tree that’s literally fuel for a fire.”
A recent demonstration by FASNY, illustrates the danger posed by dry Christmas trees. In just seconds, a dry tree can become engulfed in flames, quickly spreading to nearby furniture and curtains.
To keep your holiday celebrations safe, experts advise the following tips and tricks:
- Water Your Tree Regularly: A well-hydrated tree is less likely to catch fire.
- Choose the Right Spot: Place your tree away from heat sources like fireplaces and radiators.
- Inspect Your Lights: Use only UL-certified lights and avoid overloading outlets.
- Candle Safety: Never leave burning candles unattended.
- Kitchen Caution: Stay in the kitchen while cooking and keep an eye on pots and pans.
- Escape Plan: Develop and practice a fire escape plan with your family.
