Modern Disposal employees make a little boy's birthday special

Henry waits every Wednesday, no matter the weather, to greet his friends from Modern Disposal. This year Henry asked for a garbage truck-themed party.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Three Modern Disposal Workers are getting recognized for the good work they are doing in an Amherst neighborhood.

A mother, Ruth Evans, recently reached out to Modern Disposal to share just how special those three employees are to her son, and the story might just make your heart swell like ours did when we heard it.

In an email written to Modern Disposal, the mother wrote, "I wanted to reach out to contact modern disposal so I can recognize three of your amazing employees. Joe, Steve and Shaun work in our neighborhood in Amherst, New York on Wednesdays. These men have created amazing childhood memories for my children over the last 14 months through their kindness, love, patience and enthusiasm."

She goes on to share that her 2-year-old son, Henry, became obsessed with the garbage men in the summer of 2023.

"Every single Wednesday he would wait outside for Joe, Steve and Shaun to come down our street. He would then follow them house to house down our road and other roads in the neighborhood . He would talk and ask question and even race them to the next house. Joe and Steve were so kind and friendly with Henry that Henry decided this was going to be his weekly activity," she said.

As Henry's birthday approached this year, he asked for a garbage truck-themed party.

"This summer I asked Henry what he wanted for his birthday and all he wanted were for his friends to come to his party. His friends are Joe and Steve. When Henry hand delivered the party invitation in July for his September birthday, we never anticipated they would come on a Saturday night to a 4-year-old’s birthday party," Henry's mom wrote.

All three men made sure to make Henry's birthday special. Two of them attended Henry's party, bringing a garbage truck for the kids to checkout and interacted with the other party guests. The one worker who was unable to make it left gifts for both Henry, his twin brother, and older brother on the recycling bins a few weeks prior.

"The weekly Wednesdays of following the garbage truck has created such a commotion in our neighborhood that everyone now knows who Joe and Steve are. Elderly neighbors come to the window and have told me that they watch every Wednesday because it makes their heart so happy." she said.

"My husband and I wanted to make sure that we reached out to you and that this message reaches the superiors of modern disposal services. I know modern disposal has a suite at Highmark Stadium for the bills game. I don’t know if you’re able to do anything to give Joe and Steve tickets to a game in the suite or anything special , but they deserve the world," she said.
