ERIE COUNTY, N.Y. — Do you have any simple go-to recipes that help you during inclement weather?
Well, the Buffalo and Erie County Food Policy Council announced Wednesday that it has launched an 'Emergency Eats Recipe Challenge' ahead of the winter season.
The FPC is asking residents to participate in the challenge by submitting simple ideas for meals and snacks that can be made during an emergency event where power, resources, and fresh food may be limited.
"Providing Erie County residents with a community-driven cookbook is essential for ensuring everyone has access to nourishing, enjoyable meals during emergency situations. As extreme weather events become more frequent in our region, emergency food solutions have become a top priority for the Buffalo and Erie County Food Policy Council. When power is out, travel is restricted, and fresh food is scarce, these recipes will offer practical ways to keep families fed, while also encouraging the community to share knowledge and resources to ease the hardships of emergency events," FPC Chair Sarah Gatti said.
FPC will feature the recipes submitted in an Emergency Eats Cookbook this fall. The cookbook will be accessible online and physical copies will be distributed throughout Erie County.
Four winners will be chosen from the categories below and will receive an FPC tote bag, a printed and bound copy of the Emergency Eats Cookbook, and a $25 gift card to a grocery store of your choice, the FPC said.
Recipe categories:
- Most Resourceful: Making the most of limited ingredients.
- Healthiest: Promoting nutritious and balanced meals.
- Best Cultural Representation: Highlighting diverse cultural flavors and traditions.
- Most Cost Effective: Providing delicious meals on a budget.
Submissions guidelines:
- Cost about $10 or less to make

The FCP said you can submit recipes here. Submissions will be accepted until September 30, 2024.
