BUFFALO, N.Y. - A lactation room will soon be available for nursing moms at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
The lactation room is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in the next month. It will be located post-security, right across from gate 14 in the east concourse. Inside the room, there will be outlets for breast pump machines and a lock on the door for privacy.
The Buffalo Airport spokesperson says inside the lactation room, there will be a table, a sink and a chair, The room will be secure and can be locked for privacy.
Currently, only eight percent of airports across the country have lactation rooms for nursing moms. The Buffalo Airport is among the first in Upstate New York to have this private space inside the terminal.
The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority voluntarily decided to do this, following State Senator Tim Kennedy's introduction of proposed legislation that would require airports in New York State to offer lactation rooms for new mothers. Under the proposal, lactation rooms would have to be in place by 2017. The bill is expected to be discussed during next session, which begins in January.
The addition of the lactation room at the Buffalo Airport is expected to be complete by mid-November.
