BUFFALO, N.Y. — Since 2009, WNY United Against Drug & Alcohol Abuse Inc. has hosted a competition for art and poetry. On Monday, they announced the contest will continue for yet another year.

Students in kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to create work that demonstrates choosing healthier alternatives over drugs and alcohol.

The theme for this year is “Healthy Choices Make the Best Me.”

For art submissions, any medium is acceptable, including watercolors, crayons, markers, or acrylic, on paper, cardstock, or canvas.

Poetry submissions must be on separate 8.5-inch-by-11-inch paper.

The judging criteria includes how well the theme was incorporated, the impact of the message, the creativity and inspired design, and the craftsmanship and skill (based on age range).

All entries can be sent to: WNY United Against Drug & Alcohol Abuse, Inc. at P.O. Box 635, Orchard Park, NY 14127. Those submissions are due Nov. 30. First place includes a $50 prize, second place is $25, and third place is $20.

At the Fairgrounds Festival of Lights full experience, beginning Nov. 30 through Dec. 23, the winning artwork will be displayed.
