Lead Poisoning Prevention Week to kick off in WNY

The 12th annual International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week begins October 20 and goes until October 26.

CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. — International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week will kick off on Sunday to raise awareness about the dangers of lead in everything from paint to drinking water.

According to the World Health Organization, this year's theme is "Bright Futures Begin Lead Free."

Local WNY organizations are focused on steps to protect children from lead poisoning.

The Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) will host a training session on lead safe work practices. Those who work in industries with high lead exposure such as contractors and those prone to contact at home are encouraged to attend.

The free class will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 1 to 7 p.m. at the ECDOH, located at 503 Kensington Ave. in Buffalo.

The Chautauqua County Health Department is also hosting a free "Learn about Lead Class" on Monday, October 21 from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. at the James Prendergast Library located at 509 Cherry Street in Jamestown.

In the class, residents can learn about lead poisoning in Chautauqua County, share experiences with others, and ask questions. Anyone interested in attending this class is asked to text Lisa at 716-450-7435 to RSVP.

The CCHD says that these five steps are important to protect kids from lead poisoning:

  1. Test your home
  2. Wash hands often
  3. Wet wipe surfaces and wash toys often
  4. Feed kids healthy foods rich in iron, calcium, and vitamin C
  5. Test your kids at ages 1 and 2

They share that lead poisoning can affect anyone at any age, but youth under the age of six are at the most risk because of their growing bodies.
