WEST SENECA, N.Y. — Nearly 20 dogs are safe and sound after they were picked up Wednesday morning by the SPCA Serving Erie County.
The dogs originally came from the Humane Society in Birmingham, Ala. They were rescued from an overcrowded shelter in Louisiana, but they now have a new home.
The SPCA told 2 On Your Side that this is something that happens a lot around the country, as well as here in our area.
"This is what we often to see in the South. Animal welfare and animal control is very, very different from what is up here in the north," said Gina Lattuca, chief communications officer at the SPCA Serving Erie County. "Fortunately we are one of the receiving shelters. Our donors contribute partially, so that we save animals' lives, even animals that come from other parts of the country, where they will ultimately be euthanized."
Luttuca said the SPCA needed to examine all of the dogs, but once they are in good and healthy condition, they could be up for adoption as soon as this weekend.
