WEST SENECA, N.Y. — The SPCA Serving Erie County on Thursday shared a heartwarming rescue story about a dog who was found in a wooded area near Fredonia.
The dog got herself into a prickly situation. A man found her with 50 porcupine quills stuck in her face.
"This sweet girl emerged from the woods, clearly in distress," the SPCA said on social media. "It broke his heart to see her covered in porcupine quills, especially around her face and snout. Without hesitation, he brought her to us for help."
Now she is on the mend, thanks to Chief Medical Officer Dr. Allison Kean and the SPCA medical staff, which helped remove those porcupine quills, some of which were embedded in the dog's mouth.
"To make matters worse, it appears she tried to remove the quills herself, resulting in ripped and sore paw pads. Not only was she dealing with quills embedded in her skin, but she also had ticks in her ears," the SPCA said.
The dog received antibiotics and pain relief medication to help with her recovery.
The SPCA said donations made to its "Yelp for Help" fund helped pay for the critical medical treatment she needed.
