NEW YORK — The New York State Police announced that 14 canine teams graduated from the Canine Handler Basic School on Wednesday.

The canine teams included one from the Orchard Park Police Department, in addition to the Oswego Police Department and the State Police.

Canines Corbett and Arri from the State Police are joining Troop A, stationed in Batavia. Corbett and Arri's specialties are explosives, tracking, and patrol.

This ceremony took place at the New York State Police Academy in Albany and came after 20 weeks of training in Cooperstown.

The canines and handlers received instruction in basic obedience, agility, handler protection, building searches, explosive or narcotic detection, tracking for fugitives and lost or missing persons and more, according to the State Police press release.

The State Police Canine Unit now consists of 85 teams.

Canines are named after State Police officers who have died in the line of duty.
