Last week was another cold one - so we whipped up something to get our feathered friends (and maybe a few squirrels!) through the winter.
The treats made of natural peanut butter, bird seed, nuts, and dried fruit, are a great addition to your regular bird seed - and your backyard critters are sure to love them.
They're easy and quick to make, and good for the birds.
How to make Peanut Butter Birdie Balls:
Ingredients:
About a cup of natural peanut butter
About 4 cups of bird seed
Chopped nuts (unsalted!)
Dried fruit
Thistle (optional)
Mix until you are able to form a ball around the size of a big meatball - you may need to add more peanut butter so the mixture holds together. Honey can also act as a binding agent.
Freeze the balls on a tray with a sheet of wax paper, and let sit for a few hours.
When fully firm, you can wrap wool yarn around the ball and hang it from a tree, or you put the balls in a suet feeder.
The yarn is nice because the birds will use it for building nests!
Have fun! And if you do make some bird treats, take a picture and send it to us so we
can share it on the air.
