BUFFALO, N.Y. — Thousands enjoyed a free sit-down or take-out meal with all the fixings at the Martha P. Mitchell Community Center on Oakwood Avenue in Buffalo.
It was served to residents at the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority.
BMHA Executive Director Gillian Brown, MMCC Director Pastor Al Wilson, BMHA Commissioners, and a team of BMHA staff and resident volunteers, helped to serve the meals and go door to door with deliveries.
"I like giving back. I like helping. It's just in my nature to be a helper," volunteer Keyunne Martin said.
This event is in it's 10th year and Pastor Al Wilson spearheaded it. Wilson said this event continues to grow each and every year.
"It is our heart's desire that we continue to service this city of good neighbors," Wilson said.
D'era Fambo received one of the meals. Fambo said, "It's a wonderful feeling, especially for the ones who can't get out. You can get delivered to you. You don't even have to leave. You don't have to cook. You don't have to worry about nothing, but just eat and eat good."
Khalil Sullivan also received a meal. Sullivan said, "Its good to see the people come together to help other people I think stuff like that is rare now a days. It just feels good."
BMHA Community Police Officer, Andrea Anderson said, "You never know when you're going to be in a situation where you need to eat or we're hungry. We can't walk around like we're so entitled and we're guaranteed the next day. No, we have to be humble."
The organization said a network of religious and nonprofit organizations donates turkeys and other foods. The Lexington Co-op teamed up with the BMHA for another year to donate 100 fresh and frozen turkeys.
