BUFFALO, N.Y. — April 23 is Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day, taking us back to a time not so long ago when home, school and work weren't all under one roof everyday.
The University at Buffalo had a whole day of programs planned originally, but rather than cancel -- they moved their activities online.
UB's Manager of Work Wellness and Workplace Programming, Michele Poitras says the whole endeavor was a learning experience being headed up by their intern Julia Borkowski. The day started with a STEM activity. They also planned a cooking class for healthy snacks, a dance class, story time and even yoga -- all to engage kids and give parents a bit of a break.
In these challenging times, Michele says now more than ever it is the biggest gift parents can give themselves.
"No one's perfect. You're not gonna be the perfect parent, you're not gonna be the perfect employee. And right now, we're managing so many multiple priorities, just do your best and that's all you can do. And I think everybody's feeling Dealing with the exact same challenges. So if some glitch happens, everyone's gonna laugh it off, no one's gonna hold you hold you accountable or hold it against you. It's just, I think if you take the pressure off yourself, you're gonna feel a little bit more at ease and just feel better about your performance overall."
Michelle says another great tip is to make sure parents communicate their challenges and concerns with their employers. She says if employers initiate those conversations it can be even more effective.
Thursday's activities were open to just UB faculty and staff but they are making all their virtual sessions available to the public. You can find them right here on the UB website.
