Trout released in Ellicott Creek

The students have been raising the trout all school year as part of a DEC program called "Trout in the Classroom."

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Trout with names like "Tiger" and "Bubble Nugget" were released into Ellicott Creek on Monday morning.

"I thought it was really fun to raise the trout and even that some of them died it was still really fun to go through the cycle and watch them," said Julia Costello, one of the third grade students responsible for raising the trout.

Costello and her classmates at St. Mary's of Swormville have been raising them since the beginning of the school year.

"They've been working on feeding them, we've worked on telling the kids how the water temperature works and the differences between the creek is to the tank that we've had all year," Health and Phys. Ed. Teacher Harrison Reeds said.

This was all through a DEC program called Trout in the Classroom. The students started with a cold water tank and 100 eggs.

"It was definitely filled with mixed emotions, because we did have some casualties along the way." Third Grade Science Teacher Kristy Witkowski said. "For me, it was seeing that excitement and those ah-ha moments."

Retired teacher Polly Lougen first brought the program to St. Mary's in 2017.

"It's quite in important, it teaches the children the value of nature and god's creation and how beautiful nature really is," she said.
