Western New York parents welcome Leap Day babies

Parents welcomed a new class of "leaplings" to the world at local hospitals on Thursday.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Feb. 29 is a special birthday, and Western New York parents welcomed their little "leaplings" to the world at local hospitals on Thursday.

Greyson Brian Brown was the first leap day baby born at Sisters of Charity Hospital.

He arrived at 6:56 a.m. to first-time parents Christina and Josh Brown of Tonawanda and weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces.

Greyson's due date was actually March 15, so his parents hadn't considered a Leap Day birth until Christina was admitted to the hospital earlier this week.

Now the Browns say even on non-leap years, they'll continue celebrate his birthday in February, on the 28th.

"Definitely the 28th," Josh said. "It's still the month of February. You can't do March 1 because he's not a March baby."

Over at Oishei Children's Hospital, their first leap day baby arrived at 2:55 a.m.

"Very happy healthy, it was mom and dad's first baby, so very exciting for the first baby to be born on Leap Day," hospital president Dr. Stephen Turkovich said.

With that, Ava's parents, Justin and Aaliyah of Buffalo, won a $2,900 gift card from Tops Friendly Markets to spend on diapers and baby supplies.

Andy Brocato of Tops Friendly Markets said: "It's the 29th day, so Tops brought $2,900 in Tops gift cards good for both food and fuel. Great for diapers and all the baby swaddling clothes and stuff like that."

Every baby born at Oishei and Millard Fillmore on Leap Day received a Tops care package with cupcakes, a baby book, swaddle cloth, and a gift certificate for a smash cake to use on their first birthday next year.

"They're extra special, because there's very few people in the world who have a birthday on February 29th," Dr. Turkovich said. "So they're part of a small group of people and they'll always have that as a unique piece of their history."

Finally, there was a doubly special arrival at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital.

Parents Kevin and Donna Moyer and big brother Mac Moyer welcomed twin boys Cal and Grady on Leap Day.
