Cherry blossom trees bloom earlier than ever at the Buffalo Japanese Garden

If pink is your favorite color, now's the time to get to the Japanese Garden behind the Buffalo History Museum.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — If pink is your favorite color, now's the time to get to the Japanese Garden behind the Buffalo History Museum, where the cherry blossom trees are in full bloom.

"This is actually to the best of our knowledge the earliest that these trees have ever bloomed here," Brian Hayden of the Buffalo History Museum told 2 On Your Side.

The early bloom won't change the date of the upcoming Cherry Blossom Festival, set for April 27th - 28th.

"The great thing is, the Cherry Blossom Festival takes place regardless of when the cherry blossoms bloom, so we like to consider April Cherry Blossom season here in the Japanese Garden and at the museum," Hayden said.

The festival, and the trees themselves are a tribute to Buffalo's longstanding relationship with its sister city in Japan, Kanazawa.

"That led to the creation of the Japanese Garden here decades ago, and really the festival is a celebration of all things Japanese culture, too," Hayden said.

Visitors are reminded not to touch or damage the trees.

"We're just asking everyone to take a little extra care, because we want these trees to be around for many years to come," Hayden said.
